      Taking Care of People,

                     Not Just Diseases

Dr. Wiley

Since starting his practice in 1979, Dr. Henry E. Wiley has become a leading dermatologist throughout Florida and the country specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. However, his many notable professional accomplishments and medical credentials alone do not define this caring physician.

Early in his medical career, Dr. Wiley encountered a remarkable teacher who was an outstanding dermatologist with keen diagnostic skills. Dr. Wiley noticed that this physician made diagnoses that other doctors missed and saw things that other doctors overlooked. At first Dr. Wiley thought that was because his mentor had a brilliant mind, vast experience, and extensive knowledge. But Dr. Wiley had other teachers with those qualities who lacked his mentor's insight into patients and their clinical problems. There had to be something more. As Dr. Wiley spent more and more time with this mentor, it gradually began to dawn upon Dr. Wiley that this remarkable teacher was also a remarkable human being. Without words and only by example, his mentor had shown Dr. Wiley that a doctor with technical skills can look at a patient; but only a doctor in touch with what it means to be a human being can really see. Attempting to live up to the example of this mentor with each and every patient is fundamental to Dr. Wiley's practice of medicine today.

Responsibility to Patients

Dr. Wiley considers the skin to be an external layer of the human spirit. His patients are not diseases to be treated, but rather human beings worthy of respect who happen to have skin problems. He believes that having some understanding of a patient's life, not just their condition, can make a meaningful difference in their medical care.

That’s why Dr. Wiley provides all the medical treatment in the practice himself. He sees each and every patient, listens and asks questions. And he allows time with each patient to make sure their questions have been answered. Sometimes the most minor concern can be evidence of a more serious issue, and Dr. Wiley’s hands-on approach puts his patients in an advantageous position for early diagnosis and successful treatment.

"There's no one focal point in this picture, but many layers...the sky, the seeds, the earth. And the roots, which make all of this life possible. This one image contains the full circle of life. In practicing medicine, it is always important never to forget that all is connected – that we do not ultimately deal with diseases, but rather with human beings who may have diseases."
